Bill Herring's Background and Biography

For many years I have helped people in Atlanta overcome chronic pornography use, repeated acts of cheating and infidelity, risky sexual behavior and versions of sex and porn addiction.  As a national expert in these issues I honor the hope and courage of people who set up an initial appointment with me to help their future be different from the past.  To help you feel confident in my abilities this page summarizes some of my professional background and provides links to more information about me both on and off this site.

I received my master's degree in 1984 and have maintained a private psychotherapy and counseling practice in Atlanta since 1991.  I became a  Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) in 2002.  Over the years I've written numerous professional articles.  I've been an editorial board member of the journal Sexual Addiction & Compulsivity for well over a decade.  I'm also a former board member of the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH) and I served for three years as the national conference chair of this sexual health organization.  A few years ago I was invited to write a chapter for the book "Reflections on the History of the Sex Addiction Field" to describe my involvement in the formative years of the field of sex addiction.

Since not everyone who struggles with a problematic sexual behavior pattern is a classic sex addict, in 2017 I published an article titled "A Framework for Categorizing Chronically Problematic Sexual Behavior".  This article has been well-received internationally and the journal's publisher awarded it "Article of the Year".  The framework I developed now serves as the core of "Advanced Topics In Problematic Sexual Behavior (ATPSB)" certificate training offered by SASH to therapists worldwide.  I recently enjoyed the additional career-defining honor of receiving the 2019 SASH "Carnes Award" for my overall contributions to advancing understanding of this field of study.

I am deeply committed to helping partners of chronic sexual betrayal heal their lives.  I think I am still the only Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) in Atlanta who is also a Certified Clinical Partner Specialist through the Association of Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists (APSATS).  All of my work is informed by a deep understanding and respect for the power of complex betrayal trauma.

I offer individual, couples and group counseling for these issues.  I can consult for just one meeting or offer assistance over a much longer period of time, as determined by the specific needs of each individual client.

I hope this helps you decide whether I'm the right person for you. If you would like to set up a time to meet in person I welcome you to contact me directly.

-Bill
