Heal Your Wounds, Honor Your Scars
"Life is pain, highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something." (The Princess Bride)
To be human is to hurt: pain is the price paid for the privilege of being alive. While wounds of the flesh can cause great injury, wounds of the heart and soul pierce deeper and linger longer.
As D. H. Lawrence wrote years ago: "I am not a mechanism, an assembly of parts; And it is not because the mechanism is working wrongly that I am ill. I am ill because of wounds to the soul – to the deep emotional self......
Even a healed wound can leave a scar in its place. A scar is like a medal awarded after battle or a historic marker commemorating an important event that took place. Scars can evoke the memory of a wound without its raw pain. I consider emotional scars to be markers of strength and wisdom forged out of deep suffering.
My motto here is simple: wounds should be healed and scars should be honored. EMDR and Brainspotting are just two examples of the evolving range of tools for accelerating the healing of emotional wounds caused by a wide range of trauma. The appropriate use of these types of techniques can support and strengthen the effective use of other advanced therapeutic conversations that are capable of transforming deep pain into tremendous growth. So while pain of the heart and soul may be an inevitable part of life, the prospect of healing, honoring and comforting that pain is available to anyone who reaches out for it.
