General Adult Psychotherapy in Atlanta

I recently started individual counseling with a new client who first looked at my website just before our initial appointment and who said to me "I didn't know your practice was focused so much on sex."  It was then that I realized I should probably write here what I told that person.

It's obvious from looking at my website that I have a deep and abiding interest in helping people work their way through problems related to conflicts between their sexual behavior and their commitments, their values and/or their self-control. This is immensely challenging and rewarding work.  I am very often inspired by my clients as they mature in character, commitment, courage and authenticity. I've witnessed relationships flourish that initially seemed doomed.  The majesty of the human spirit under travail is a rare honor to witness on a regular basis, and the kinds of sexual dilemmas that I help people address often lead to profoundly positive life changes.

But I don't just work with sexual dysfunctions as the sole focus of my practice.  I prefer to have a balance in my caseload between this specialty and the more general reasons people seek out a qualified therapist.  I started my career in the 1980s as a  psychotherapist and counselor for children, adolescents and adults.  Over the years I've worked in many different practice settings with a diverse range of problems.  After about a decade in private practice I narrowed my focus to working exclusively with adults.  In that time I have provided individual and relationship counseling to a lot of people in the Atlanta area. I help people heal from depression, anxiety, self-esteeem issues and all of the other struggles adults experience in their lives.

The most specialized services I provide would count for little without a solid basis of therapeutic skills and experience.  So in addition to being a highly qualified specialist I am an extremely solid general practitioner for adult issues.  I don't work with all problems (for instance I don't consider myself an expert on eating disorders) and I often refer certain requests to colleagues if I feel I am not among the most qualified providers for that particular issue.  It's become clear to me as the years progress that as a mature male I have a great deal to offer men who have experienced success in some areas of their lives but find themselves hobbled by other challenging life issues they would benefit greatly from addressing.

I have devoted mountains of time and energy to be as effective as I am as a counselor and psychotherapist. It's important to me to know that I am providing a valuable service to justify the significant time, money and effort people invest in me to help them change the course of their lives.  So if you reside in the Atlanta area and your main reason for seeing a counselor or psychotherapist doesn't have anything to do with sex, the benefit of my experience and skills are equally available to you as well and I hope you will give me the opportunity to help you with your counseling and psychotherapy needs.
